I went to college up north and hated the frigid winter seasons and the ice and snow that made driving particularly dangerous at times. If you weren’t careful, you could inadvertently walk onto a patch of ice on a sidewalk, slip, fall, and suffer a serious bone fracture. This happened to my best friend’s mother during our last year of college, and after several surgeries she was finally on her feet again. I had the chance to stay in that state for graduate school, but I instead sought to move further southward where average temperatures are much warmer. It’s not hard to please me and I would have been satisfied moving to inland Georgia, but I was lucky enough to find a graduate school program in Cocoa, Florida. It’s cool living so close to both the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and the Kennedy Space Center. My classes in elementary school took field trips to both space stations and I was amazed looking at the rockets and space shuttles. Despite the perks, Cocoa is really hot in the summer. I can only survive in 100 degree weather if I have a good air conditioner running at all times. I can’t spend all of my days out at Cocoa Beach even if I had the place to myself. With magnificent views of the city, coastline and Santa Ynez Mountains, there are plenty of photo opportunities. Once you are in the park there is no shortage of fun. Play in the waves with your dog or kids. There are playgrounds available that actually are clean, safe and great for the kids. There are even picnic tables and BBQs at the park. It is easy, cheap and a fun day out for the whole family. My family goes a few times a year. Sometimes it is more of a beach day for us. The kids play in the water, make sandcastles and then we all go home a little burnt. Sometimes it is more of a relaxing grill day. My husband will bring meat and I will bring fresh seafood from the market. The kids will fly kites, kick a soccer ball or play tag nearby. Then we all have a freshly made dinner at one of the picnic tables. It makes for a good family day. It isn’t expensive and everyone has fun. Another perk of the park is along the way there is a cannabis shop my husband and I like to go to. I usually drop him off, run some errands with the kids and then pick my husband back up. We don’t tell the kids we are getting recreational weed to smoke later. It is not like we are hiding it, but I don’t want to advertise doing something fun they aren’t allowed to try.

I have of course experienced it.

I have been in cars with AC, movie theaters and restaurants. I really don’t like the feeling of cold air blowing all over me. It seems gross and uncomfortable. Air conditioning kind of has a weird smell to it too. My house is outfitted with three heating systems but no AC. I have a gas fireplace in the living room, a ventless heater in the kitchen and the upstairs bedrooms have their own electric heating device. Why do I need so much heating power? In Glenview Illinois it gets cold. It can get as cold as 15 degrees in January. Around Easter time the cold still lingers in the 40-50 range. I don’t mind running the heaters most of the year. There is something so comforting about having quality heat and burrowing under a blanket. Once May comes around, the weather really changes for the better. I feel my area has the best kind of weather. It is a light jacket and warm shorts. I don’t even sweat to death and feel like it is difficult to breathe. In the summer months the temperatures might dip into the 80s. I have an old box fan that I bring down from the attic when that happens. Most of the time I just enjoy the fact that I don’t have any HVAC going. I can open my windows and have clean air blowing into the home. I really don’t know how people in Texas and California can handle the heat.

My wife and I were cleaning the garage on Saturday, because we wanted to make room for one of the cars. Tampa crime rates are up and three cars were vandalized in our neighborhood last week. The Tampa Bay police department asked a lot of questions and the county police were here too. I hate living in Tampa, but my wife works at the Aquarium. We previously had a lot of junk stored in the garage. There were boxes all over the place. We had Christmas, Halloween, and Easter decorations. We had old boxes of stuff from when the children were little. When we started moving boxes around, my wife noticed some mold and condensation near the windows of the garage. She immediately freaked out and thought we needed to buy a dehumidifier. I try to make my wife feel more calm by offering some advice and assistance. I honestly didn’t think a dehumidifier was necessary, but I thought the mold and humidity was likely an issue. We sprayed down the walls with a bleach solution and I wiped them down with antibacterial wipes. After that, I purchased a huge one gallon tub of damprid. This is a really cool product that helps soak up moisture. After only a few days, the entire container was filled with water. I might need to buy one or two more before all of the moisturize is gone, but this solution is a lot cheaper than paying a Tampa heating and air conditioning company to help with the problem. The weekend rates are through the roof.

My friends and I were staying in Oakland, because we had a work convention in San Francisco.

We didn’t want to stay in San Francisco and the accommodations in Oakland were cheaper.

It was easy to jump across the bridge and a quick 20 minute commute. We saved about 50 bucks per night for our accommodations. I used some of that money to buy recreational cannabis. I know it’s hard for some people to understand why I would give up so much of my privacy to live in the city, but it’s worth it when you get to enjoy all of the rich culture of San Francisco. One day I will settle down and live a boring life, but that day is not today.

That presence has carried over, because the newer show Better Call Saul is also set here in ABQ, as was the Netflix original movie El Camino. Like I was saying, a lot of people in Albuquerque don’t like being associated with that show, but thanks to Walter White tens of thousands of tourists a year flock to our city to relive the highs and lows of Breaking Bad, and these folks also tend to visit our amazing local cannabis dispensaries. .

Did you ever hear the story of how Denver, Colorado got its name? It goes way back before this was even a town, when it was just a mining community. Halloween is over, and once again I am a little depressed about that.
