A couple of my co-workers and I smoke recreational cannabis.
Sometimes we get high in the break room before we go back to work.
A couple of days ago at lunch time, my boss walked by their break room and he smelled cannabis. He immediately came into the room and started asking questions. I was the only person left in the room when that incident occurred. I acted like I didn’t know what he was talking about. The next day there was an email from the boss threatening to test everyone for marijuana use. The laws in this state are fuzzy and I’m not sure if the boss can actually fire us or not for using marijuana. Recreational and medical marijuana were both legalized in the state of New Mexico and that includes the city of Albuquerque. I currently work and live in Albuquerque. When the boss threatened my job, I started to look online to see if I could find out the rules regarding the use of marijuana and my job. I didn’t know if the threats were valid or not. It turns out that my boss had to include that information in the contract when I signed up to work at the firm in Albuquerque. I’m not going to push the issue right now, because I don’t want the boss to know that my friends and I were the ones smoking recreational marijuana. We definitely won’t smoke in the break room anymore. I’ll go down to my car even if I have to cut my lunch break 10 minutes short.
